Russia is establishing permanent drone bases in Belarus to station long-range unmanned aerial vehicles capable of striking deep into Ukraine, according to warnings from Ukrainian military intelligence, marking a significant escalation in the military integration of the two allied states.
The bases, reportedly under construction in multiple locations across Belarus, will house Russian long-range strike drones that can reach targets throughout Ukraine from new northern launch points. According to Ukrainian intelligence assessments, the infrastructure represents Moscow's effort to expand its operational capabilities and create additional attack vectors against Ukrainian territory.
In Russia, as in much of the former Soviet space, understanding requires reading between the lines. The establishment of permanent Russian military infrastructure in Belarus signals deepening military cooperation between Moscow and Minsk that extends beyond the nominal "union state" framework that has existed since the 1990s. The drone bases represent a qualitative shift from temporary deployments to permanent forward operating positions.
Strategic Implications for Ukraine's Northern Border
The positioning of long-range drones in Belarus creates significant strategic challenges for Ukraine's northern defenses. Since Russian forces withdrew from their failed attempt to capture Kyiv in early 2022, the Belarusian border has remained relatively quiet, with Minsk avoiding direct military participation in the war despite hosting Russian forces.
However, the establishment of drone bases allows to strike Ukrainian targets from northern launch points without requiring Belarusian ground forces to cross the border. This approach provides with political cover—maintaining the fiction that is not directly participating in the conflict—while giving expanded operational flexibility.
