The end of an era is coming to Camp Nou, folks. Robert Lewandowski, one of the greatest strikers of his generation, is close to making the decision to leave FC Barcelona.
And according to reports from Polish outlet Meczyki, Saudi Arabia is strongly in consideration as his next destination.
Sunday's match against Real Betis at Camp Nou is likely to be Lewandowski's farewell. Think about that for a moment. One of the most prolific goal scorers in football history, walking off that historic pitch for the last time in a Barcelona shirt.
Lewandowski came to Barcelona with so much promise. After dominating the Bundesliga for years with Bayern Munich, he was supposed to lead Barca back to glory. And for stretches, he delivered – the goals came, the moments of brilliance flashed. But the trophies didn't pile up the way everyone expected.
Now, at 37 years old, Lewandowski is looking at his options. And like so many aging stars before him, the financial allure of Saudi Arabia is hard to ignore. The Saudi Pro League has become a destination for legendary players in the twilight of their careers – Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kanté, and others have made the move.
For Lewandowski, it makes sense. He's accomplished everything in European football – league titles in Germany and Spain, Champions League glory, individual awards, goal-scoring records. If is offering a massive payday and a chance to be the face of their league, why not?
