## Flagship Program Shuttered After 29 Years
Budapest — TV2's "Tények" news program is being cancelled after nearly three decades on air, marking the most visible sign yet that Hungary's pro-government media infrastructure is undergoing rapid contraction even before the incoming administration takes office.
TV2 CEO Miklós Vaszily confirmed the shutdown this week, citing "brand erosion" and claiming the network would pursue "proper professional news standards" going forward. The announcement represents a dramatic reversal for a program that served as the Orbán government's primary propaganda vehicle for much of the past decade.
The program, under editorial leadership that included Vivien Szalai until her recent removal, faced over 150 required corrections following legal challenges from opposition politicians. According to 444.hu, the outlet became notorious for factually incorrect reports targeting political opponents.
## Broader Media Ecosystem Under Pressure
TV2's restructuring is not an isolated event. Mandiner, the conservative news outlet now owned by Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC), plans to reduce its workforce of approximately 150 by half, with cuts concentrated in online and YouTube operations. Reports from Hang.hu indicate that even Origo's closure has been discussed among media stakeholders.
An insider familiar with internal deliberations described the strategic calculus facing pro-government media operators: "Mandiner or Magyar Nemzet. Index or Origo. Hír Tv or TV2—these are the alternatives now occupying many minds, because it's evident that maintaining everything together is neither possible nor probably advisable."
