A Cape Town school principal allegedly behind a Facebook account containing racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, and anti-Muslim content—along with photographs of assault rifles and ammunition—has been transferred to a deputy principal role at another school rather than dismissed, sparking outrage from parents and questions about accountability in South Africa's education system.
George Gueorguiev, former principal of Kommetjie Primary School, has been reassigned to Simon's Town School, a historic institution founded in 1815 that serves approximately 1,080 students across Grades R-12. The Western Cape Education Department confirmed the transfer in a statement to Daily Maverick but declined to reveal investigation findings, citing privacy protections under the Protection of Personal Information Act.
Parents at Kommetjie Primary discovered the Facebook account under the name "George Yankov" in March 2025, linking it to Gueorguiev through matching profile photos, banner images, and a private email address. The account contained dozens of posts expressing hateful views across multiple categories of prejudice, raising concerns about his suitability to lead a diverse school community.
Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond stated tersely: "The sanction resulted in the transfer of the employee to a deputy principal post at Simon's Town School." The brevity of the explanation and lack of transparency about the investigation have frustrated parents and community members who expected stronger consequences.
Jeremy Bristow-Bovey, a former member of Kommetjie Primary's School Governing Body, warned Simon's Town School that it now faces challenges he documented over 7.5 years: "The burden of managing these risks has simply been transferred from one school to another." Bristow-Bovey's records include staff resignations, a failed no-confidence vote in December 2023, and a false child abuse allegation allegedly made against a teacher.
