The Philippines House Committee on Justice voted 54-1 to advance impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, marking the most decisive step yet in the unraveling alliance between the Marcos and Duterte political dynasties.

The committee ruled that the third and fourth impeachment complaints against Duterte were sufficient in substance, with Representative Bong Suntay, a known Duterte loyalist, casting the lone dissenting vote. The lopsided tally signals the extent to which Duterte has lost support within the House, a body that just two years ago backed her vice presidential campaign.

The impeachment complaints center on allegations of corruption, betrayal of public trust, and culpable violation of the Constitution. They follow months of escalating tensions between President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his former running mate, whose father ruled the country for six years before Marcos assumed office.

According to GMA Network, the presidential palace has stated that Marcos will not intervene in the proceedings, maintaining that impeachment is a constitutional process reserved for Congress.

The fracture between the two families has profound implications for Philippines politics ahead of the 2028 elections. The Marcos-Duterte alliance delivered a landslide victory in 2022, but mutual accusations of incompetence and corruption have since eroded the partnership. Duterte has positioned herself as the opposition leader-in-waiting, while the Marcos camp seeks to consolidate power without her family's political machine in Mindanao.

The complaints now move to the full House for a vote on whether to transmit them to the Senate for trial. With the committee's overwhelming endorsement, the impeachment process appears likely to proceed—ten countries, 700 million people, one region, and in the Philippines, a political drama that could reshape the electoral landscape for years to come.
