When Pat Riley speaks, people listen. And on Friday, the Miami Heat president had something to say to everyone trying to tear down Bam Adebayo's 83-point masterpiece.
"It's bulls---." That's how Riley started. "It's all bulls---. It really is. Anybody who is negative on it, anybody who was cynical about it... They took an iconic, absolute incredible performance, and they tried to dismiss it. And that's not fair."
Let's be clear about what we're talking about here, folks. 83 points. Only Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game sits higher. Adebayo passed Kobe Bryant's 81 for the second-highest individual scoring performance in NBA history, and some people out there are finding reasons to complain.
The critics say the Heat manipulated the game, that they intentionally missed free throws and committed fouls to get Adebayo extra possessions. Riley isn't having it. "The same thing happened with Wilt Chamberlain when he got 100 back in the day. But I don't buy any of that," he fired back.
Here's what the haters are missing - the supernatural element to this whole story. Adebayo's grandmother passed away five years ago at the age of 83. The game happened on what would have been her birthday. His mother's brother called after the game to remind her of that coincidence. You can't make this stuff up.
"If anybody deserves it, he does," said Kevin Graves, Adebayo's AAU coach and current manager.
