As one official demonstrated: "Left click, right click, left click... We've gone from identifying the target, to now coming up with a course of action, to now actioning that target all within one system."
Project Maven is the AI targeting system that's been controversial since Google employees revolted against working on it back in 2018. Palantir stepped in to continue development, and the Pentagon demonstration shows the technology has matured significantly. The system can identify potential targets from drone footage, suggest strike options, and integrate with weapons systems - streamlining what used to be a multi-hour process into minutes.
From a pure technology perspective, this is genuinely impressive. Machine learning models trained on vast amounts of surveillance footage can spot vehicles, equipment, and patterns that human analysts might miss. The integration with command systems means faster decision cycles, which in military terms can mean the difference between hitting a target and missing the window.
But here's the question nobody seems to be asking: should targeting decisions really be this easy? The whole point of having humans in the loop was supposed to be judgment, ethics, proportionality - things that take time because they're important.
The Pentagon insists humans still make the final call. But when the system streamlines everything from identification to course of action to execution into a few clicks, how much genuine deliberation is happening? Are operators reviewing the AI's target identification critically, or just confirming what the impressive-looking system is telling them?
There's also the accuracy question. Palantir and the Pentagon are understandably vague about error rates, but we know from other military AI applications that "remarkably accurate" still means mistakes happen. When those mistakes cost lives, "left click, right click, target actioned" starts to feel a lot less sleek.
