With overtourism crushing traditional European destinations and prices skyrocketing, travelers are discovering a stunning lakeside alternative that delivers alpine-level beauty at backpacker prices: Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia.
A recent trip report describes the destination as "like Switzerland but cheap and Balkan," highlighting crystal-clear waters, ancient monasteries, and off-season tranquility that budget travelers dream about. The traveler flew from Memmingen to Ohrid for a long weekend in late February and found "SUPER nice" conditions they didn't expect.
"We were very lucky to have excellent weather; the lake was so magical under the sun," they wrote. "Honestly, it felt like a dream."
The advantage of visiting in February? Minimal crowds. While many Macedonians love visiting the area as day-trippers during daylight hours, nights were "very quiet." This stands in sharp contrast to summer months when the lakeside town fills with visitors.
The real draws are the natural wonders. St. Naum Monastery, accessible by rental car instead of the €25 "party boat," features the Black Drin Spring where water was "unbelievably clear and pristine."
