Rising Brazilian opposition lawmaker Nikolas Ferreira, one of the country's most prominent young conservative voices, traveled on a private jet belonging to gambling entrepreneur Wesley Vorcaro, who is currently under investigation for money laundering and operating illegal online casinos, according to an investigation by The Intercept Brasil.
The revelations add to growing scrutiny of the intersection between Brazil's illegal gambling industry and its political class, particularly within the conservative movement that has surged since Jair Bolsonaro's presidency. Ferreira, a federal deputy from Minas Gerais, has built a massive social media following of over 10 million people with provocative videos attacking the Lula government and progressive causes.
According to The Intercept's reporting, Ferreira flew on Vorcaro's Cessna Citation jet on multiple occasions in 2025. Vorcaro, who made his fortune operating online slot machines (caça-níqueis) and sports betting platforms, was formally denounced by federal prosecutors in February 2026 for allegedly laundering R$482 million through real estate purchases in Miami.
In Brazil, as across Latin America's giant, continental scale creates both opportunity and governance challenges. The explosion of online gambling in Brazil has created a vast gray market estimated at over R$50 billion annually, with poor Brazilians often the primary victims of predatory betting apps that drain family finances. The Lula government has pushed for regulation of the sector, but enforcement remains weak.
Ferreira has not denied the flights but stated through his press office that they were "personal trips" and that he had "no knowledge of any investigation into Mr. Vorcaro at the time." The lawmaker added that he has never received campaign contributions from Vorcaro or his companies, though campaign finance experts note that illegal gambling operators often use intermediaries to funnel money to politicians.
The connection between Ferreira and Vorcaro extends beyond the flights. Both men have ties to Lagoinha Church, a prominent neo-Pentecostal megachurch in that has become increasingly political in recent years. Vorcaro has been a major donor to church-affiliated causes, while Ferreira has spoken at church events and maintains close relationships with its leadership.
