Lagos — A new wave of Nigerian entrepreneurs is building diaspora concierge services that help Nigerians abroad manage errands, coordinate events, and verify vendors at home—turning the country's trust deficit into a business opportunity.
The services address a persistent challenge for Nigeria's vast diaspora: how to reliably handle tasks in Nigeria without constantly relying on family members or risking money with unknown vendors. In a country where institutional trust remains low, these entrepreneurs offer themselves as verified intermediaries.
"Trust was the biggest concern everyone mentioned," explained a founder who recently launched Groundally, a diaspora concierge service. After discussing the concept on social media, she received her first customer—a Canadian-based Nigerian who needed help coordinating a friend's birthday celebration in Lagos.
The service model is deliberately transparent. Rather than handling vendor payments directly, the entrepreneur sends vendor account details to clients who pay themselves, then forwards receipts. For her own service fee, payment is split: 60% upfront, 40% after completion. "I never collected vendor payments personally," she emphasized.
The first job involved coordinating an apartment, wig, dress, jewelry, and logistics. The entrepreneur physically visited vendors, sent real-time photos and videos, verified quality before payments, and maintained constant communication. For a high-value wig purchase, she went to the store in person, documenting everything before the client proceeded.
In Nigeria, as across Africa's giants, challenges are real but entrepreneurial energy and cultural creativity drive progress. The dysfunction that makes such services necessary—unreliable vendors, coordination challenges, infrastructure gaps—becomes the foundation for innovative business models.
The client's feedback highlighted what made the service valuable: responsiveness, initiative without prompting, problem-solving without requiring client intervention, and taking on the mental load of coordination. "You were on top of things, communicated when needed and solved problems without needing me to find solutions," the testimonial read.
Services currently offered include concierge and personal errands, birthday and surprise coordination, apartment assistance, vendor sourcing and verification, deliveries and pickups, home arrival preparation, and general logistics support. The model targets Nigerians abroad who want things done right without the stress of managing from a distance.
