Sometimes in sports, the story writes itself. Sometimes the business of hockey—all the contracts and cap space and conditional picks—gives way to something bigger. Sometimes a player gets a second chance at the ending he deserves.
That's what's happening with Nazem Kadri.
The Calgary Flames have traded Kadri back to the Colorado Avalanche, the team where he won a Stanley Cup in 2022. In return, the Avs sent Victor Olofsson, prospect Max Curran, and conditional first and second-round picks to Calgary. The Flames are also retaining 20 percent of Kadri's salary to make the cap math work.
But forget the assets for a second. This is about redemption.
Kadri left Colorado after winning the Cup. He signed a big contract with Calgary—seven years, $49 million—because that's what teams offered him and that's what players do. You take care of your family. You get paid. Nobody blames him for that.
But it never quite worked in Calgary. The Flames struggled. The roster never came together. And Kadri, who'd been a hero in Colorado's championship run—87 points in 71 games that season—found himself on a team going nowhere.
Now he gets to go back. Back to Denver. Back to the team where he became a champion. Back to the locker room where he proved he was more than a supporting player—he was a star.
The Avalanche are making a run this year. They've got Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar and Mikko Rantanen. They've got the talent to win another Cup. But they needed depth down the middle, and Kadri gives them exactly that.
This isn't just a hockey trade. This is the hockey gods saying, "You know what? Let's give this guy another shot." Let's give him a chance to wear that championship logo again. Let's give him a chance to skate in an arena where the fans remember what he did. Let's give him a chance to finish his career the right way.
