Electoral activists in Kenya are sounding an alarm that might surprise voters focused on registration drives: registering to vote is the easy part. Protecting those votes from manipulation will require far more organization than Kenya has demonstrated.
The warning comes from activists who worked as election clerks during the 2022 general election and witnessed firsthand how votes are compromised. Their message is blunt: without massive grassroots mobilization to guard polling stations, registration numbers mean nothing.
"People think 'chukua kura' is about registering," said Wafula Omondi, who served as a returning officer in Mbeere during the last election. "That's the easiest step. The hard part is 'linda kura,' protecting those votes from being stolen. And most Kenyans have no idea what that actually requires."
Election officials describe a system where political aspirants work with police and hired enforcers to intimidate election workers. Politicians use guns to threaten returning officers. Goons beat up election officials and party agents, chasing them from polling centers. Ballots go uncounted or get stuffed. Results get altered.
"I watched it happen," Omondi recalled. "Armed men walked into our center, party agents ran, and suddenly the count changed. What are you supposed to do when someone points a gun at you?"
The 2022 election saw these tactics deployed in Mbeere and other constituencies. Activists warn that 2027 will see the same methods on a national scale and "on steroids," enabled by funds allegedly being siphoned from state institutions.
Protecting the 2027 election would require constant monitoring, live streaming from polling centers (which the IEBC has banned), grassroots coordination far beyond current activist networks, and citizens willing to physically stand between vote riggers and ballot boxes.
