Iran has launched military strikes against United States forces recently relocated to Kuwait's Bubiyan Island, according to an Iranian military spokesperson, marking a direct escalation in hostilities between Tehran and Washington.
The attack, announced Sunday by Iranian Armed Forces spokesman Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi, targeted American military personnel who had reportedly been repositioned to the strategic island near the Iraq-Kuwait border in recent days. The strikes represent the first acknowledged Iranian attack on US forces since the current crisis erupted.
According to Reuters, Shekarchi told Iranian state media that the operation was conducted "with precision" against "aggressive American forces threatening our territorial integrity." He provided no casualty figures or details about the type of weapons employed.
The Pentagon has not immediately confirmed the Iranian claims, maintaining its standard policy of not commenting on force protection matters. Kuwait's government likewise has not issued an official statement, though diplomatic sources indicate emergency consultations are underway with American military officials.
Bubiyan Island, Kuwait's largest island, sits at the northern tip of the Persian Gulf, strategically positioned near the Iraqi border and in proximity to Iranian territorial waters. The island has long served as a security buffer zone, with Kuwaiti authorities typically restricting access to military and security forces.
