The head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards intelligence organization has been killed, Iranian state media announced Sunday, marking the highest-ranking military casualty in the Islamic Republic since the current crisis began.
Brigadier General Majid Khademi, who led the intelligence division of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), died under circumstances that remain unclear. Iranian media provided few details about how or where the senior intelligence official was killed, though the announcement came amid intensifying regional tensions.
According to Reuters, Iranian state television broadcast a brief statement confirming Khademi's death, describing him as a "martyred commander" without elaborating on the specific circumstances. The IRGC has pledged to release additional information "at an appropriate time."
The intelligence chief's death comes at a critical juncture as Iran faces mounting pressure over its closure of the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing proxy conflicts across the Middle East. Khademi had been a key figure in the IRGC's regional operations, overseeing intelligence networks spanning Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen.
Security analysts note that the IRGC intelligence division plays a crucial role in Iran's asymmetric warfare strategy, coordinating with allied militias and conducting covert operations throughout the region. The loss of such a senior commander represents a significant blow to Tehran's operational capabilities.
The announcement triggered immediate speculation about whether was killed in an airstrike, targeted assassination, or other military action. Neither Israeli nor American officials have commented on the development, though both nations have previously targeted senior Iranian military figures.
