Indonesia's Finance Minister has announced plans to launch electric vehicle incentives by June 2026, accelerating the nation's ambitious strategy to transform its vast nickel reserves into a dominant position in the global green economy supply chain.
The announcement, reported by Kompas, marks a significant step forward in Indonesia's multi-year effort to position itself not merely as a raw materials supplier but as an integrated EV manufacturing hub. The incentives will cover both electric cars and motorcycles, recognizing the critical role two-wheeled vehicles play in Indonesian transportation.
The timing is strategically significant. While neighboring Malaysia has moved to restrict electric vehicle imports to protect its domestic automotive industry, Indonesia is pursuing the opposite approach: using incentives to accelerate EV adoption and attract foreign investment in manufacturing capacity. The contrasting strategies highlight different visions of industrial development in Southeast Asia's two largest economies.
"This isn't just about climate policy," explained an economist tracking Indonesia's EV strategy. "This is about leveraging Indonesia's control over global nickel supplies to challenge China's dominance of the EV supply chain. Indonesia wants to move up the value chain from raw nickel to battery production to complete vehicles."
Indonesia controls approximately 25% of global nickel reserves, the critical mineral used in lithium-ion batteries that power electric vehicles. Rather than simply exporting raw nickel ore, the government has implemented export restrictions designed to force foreign companies to build processing facilities and manufacturing plants within Indonesia.
The strategy has already attracted major investments from Chinese, Korean, and Japanese battery manufacturers. Companies including CATL, , and have announced multi-billion dollar investments in Indonesian battery and EV production facilities, drawn by both the nickel reserves and the promise of a rapidly growing domestic market.
