Let me tell you something, folks - I've called a lot of hockey games in my 20 years behind a microphone, and what Tomas Hertl did Tuesday night at Lenovo Center in Carolina is the stuff legends are made of.
The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, with Hertl breaking a 4-4 tie with just 3:24 remaining in regulation. But that score line doesn't tell you half the story.
Carolina came out firing. Nikolaj Ehlers scored just 25 seconds into the game, and before you could finish your beer, he was at it again on a breakaway to put the Hurricanes up 2-0. The crowd was electric. This looked like Carolina's night.
But here's what separates champions from pretenders - Vegas didn't flinch. They clawed their way back, goal by goal, until Shayne Gostisbehere tied it 4-4 at 11:19 of the third period. And then came the moment.
Colton Sissons fed Hertl on a perfect give-and-go, and the Czech sniper buried it. According to NHL.com, Vegas became the first road team in NHL history to stage a multi-goal comeback win in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. Read that again. First. Ever.
And if that wasn't enough history for one night, this game featured goals scored in the opening 30 seconds of both the first and second periods - something that's never happened before in a Cup Final game.
"We knew we had to weather the storm," said after the game.
