The Toronto Raptors' rebuild just hit a snag.
Third-year wing Gradey Dick is open to a trade, according to Sportsnet. And honestly? You can't blame him.
Despite playing in a career-high 76 games, Dick just turned in the worst statistical season of his three-year career. His role in the rotation was reduced as the season went along. He's making $7.1 million next season - the final year of his rookie scale contract - and Toronto may look to move him to free up luxury tax flexibility.
When your young players want out because their roles are shrinking, that's not a rebuild. That's a red flag.
The Raptors are in a tough spot. They're trying to develop young talent while staying competitive. They're trying to manage the salary cap while building for the future. And now, one of their young players has had enough.
Dick is 6'7" and has shown flashes of potential. But in Toronto, he's not getting the opportunity to develop. And when you're a young player trying to establish yourself in this league, opportunity is everything.
He'll be extension-eligible this offseason. If no extension is reached, he becomes a potential restricted free agent in 2027. But the writing is on the wall: Dick wants to play somewhere that believes in him.
And can you blame him? You play 76 games and your stats get worse? Your role shrinks instead of grows? That's not development. That's regression.
The Raptors need to figure out what they're doing. Are they rebuilding? Are they competing? Because right now, they're stuck in no man's land. And when your young talent starts looking for the exits, that's when you know you've got a problem.
Gradey Dick deserves a chance to develop somewhere that values him. If Toronto isn't that place, then a trade might be the best thing for everyone.
That's what sports is all about, folks.
