Folks, if you blinked during the Sharks-Panthers game, you missed something you don't see very often in hockey.
Two goalies. Center ice. Gloves off.
You better believe I replayed that one a few times.
Alex Nedeljkovic of the San Jose Sharks and Sergei Bobrovsky of the Florida Panthers threw down in what was the first goalie fight in the NHL in six years. That's right - six years. These don't happen often because, well, goalies are usually the last guys who want to skate the length of the ice looking for trouble.
But sometimes, the game gets to a boiling point where logic takes a backseat.
During a scrum in front of the net, things escalated quickly. Bobrovsky, the veteran two-time Vezina Trophy winner, came rushing down the ice. Nedeljkovic, never one to back down, met him at center ice. And then it was on - two of hockey's most protected players trading punches while their teammates watched in amazement.
"Ned hopes he made Reavo proud," the Sharks broadcast team joked afterward, referencing enforcer Ryan Reaves. And you know what? Based on the replays, Nedeljkovic more than held his own.
Goalie fights are hockey's rarest spectacle because these guys are wearing 40 pounds of equipment and aren't exactly built for hand-to-hand combat. When they do happen, it's usually a sign that things got personal - that the intensity crossed a line where pride trumped common sense.
The Sharks won the game, which probably made Nedeljkovic's skate down the ice worth it. But the real winner? Hockey fans who got to witness something they might not see again for another six years.
This is why hockey is the best sport on ice, folks. Where else do you get drama like this?
That's what sports is all about, folks.
