France just made a statement about AI sovereignty that Washington and Beijing will be watching closely: the French military is deploying Mistral AI, a domestically developed large language model, across operational decision-making systems.
This isn't about chatbots writing military reports. France is integrating AI into intelligence analysis, logistics planning, and—most significantly—command decision support. The move represents one of the first large-scale deployments of a European-built AI system in military contexts, and it's happening because France refused to trust American or Chinese technology for national security.
The geopolitics here are fascinating. Mistral AI, founded by former Google DeepMind and Meta researchers, represents Europe's best shot at AI independence. The company has raised over €600 million and built models that, while not quite matching GPT-4 or Claude in benchmarks, are close enough for government work—literally.
Why build their own rather than license American technology? Because in national security, knowing exactly how your AI works isn't optional. Using OpenAI or Anthropic models for military operations means trusting that data stays secure, that the models won't be cut off during a crisis, and that no foreign government can access or manipulate them. That's not paranoia—it's operational reality.
The French deployment focuses on accelerating decision-making without replacing human judgment. AI systems analyze intelligence feeds in multiple languages, identify patterns in logistics data that human analysts might miss, and provide commanders with options synthesized from vast amounts of information. Crucially, the final decisions remain human.
This contrasts sharply with China's approach, where AI is reportedly being integrated more deeply into autonomous systems and weapons targeting. The French model treats AI as a tool for humans rather than a replacement for them—a distinction that matters enormously when things go wrong.
