Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna just said what every car owner suspected: capacitive touch buttons cost half as much as physical controls. The automotive industry's shift to touch interfaces isn't about user experience or innovation. It's about margins.
As someone who's pitched to VCs, I appreciate the honesty. But it's infuriating that automakers have been gaslighting us for years, claiming touchscreens are "more intuitive" and "cleaner" when really they're just cheaper to manufacture.
Vigna explained that "the touch [button] is something that is made for the supplier's advantage," acknowledging that capacitive touch keys cost approximately 50% less than traditional mechanical buttons. Not 10% less. Not 20% less. Half.
That's an enormous cost savings when you're building thousands of vehicles. But it comes at the expense of usability, safety, and driver satisfaction.
Physical buttons have tactile feedback. You can adjust climate control without looking away from the road because your fingers know where the dial is. Touch screens require visual attention—you have to look at the screen, find the right icon, tap precisely, and confirm the action registered. That's seconds of distraction at highway speeds.
Studies have shown this. Safety advocates have been screaming about it. Drivers have been complaining. But automakers kept pushing touchscreens anyway because the unit economics were too good to pass up.
What's remarkable is Ferrari's reversal. The company now offers retrofits for existing models, allowing owners to swap steering wheel touch controls for physical buttons. Newer models like the Testarossa and Amalfi feature increased traditional controls. Ferrari is positioning physical buttons as a luxury feature—which is absurd, but here we are.
They're not alone. Volkswagen Group, Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota are all reducing touchscreen reliance and bringing back buttons. Meanwhile, BMW and continue doubling down on minimal button designs despite customer complaints, presumably because the cost savings are too attractive.
