The consensus from experienced budget nomads: Southeast Asia remains unbeatable for extreme budget travel, with specific cities standing out.
Vietnam topped nearly every recommendation list. Cities like Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hanoi offer comfortable living under $700/month, including accommodation, food, and transport. "You can get a decent studio for $200-250 and eat well for $5-8 per day," one nomad reported.
Indonesia outside of Bali also ranks high. Cities like Yogyakarta and Malang provide authentic experiences with costs 30-40% lower than the Bali digital nomad hubs. A private room in a shared house runs $100-150/month, with meals available for under $2.
India emerged as the ultimate budget destination for those willing to embrace its intensity. Goa, Rishikesh, and smaller cities in Rajasthan offer full apartment rentals for $150-200/month. "I lived in Pushkar for three months on $600/month and that included a yoga pass," shared one respondent.
But several experienced nomads cautioned against focusing solely on low costs. Internet reliability matters more than cheap rent when your income depends on staying online. Philippines and parts of were specifically flagged for unreliable connectivity despite low prices.
