Sometimes sports gives us moments that transcend the game. De'Aaron Fox delivered one of those moments this week, and I'm here for every second of it.
During the Spurs-Suns game, a viral video caught a woman texting something absolutely vile: "All Hispanic! How can they afford it" in reference to San Antonio's fanbase. The message was as ignorant as it was offensive.
Fox, whose children are part Mexican, didn't hold back. "It's like going to Boston and complaining there's a bunch of White people," he said. "What kind of sense is that?"
Perfect. Absolutely perfect response.
Let me break down why this matters, folks. San Antonio is 64% Hispanic. This IS their city. This IS their team. The Spurs have been part of the fabric of this community for decades, and the Hispanic fanbase has been there through it all - through the David Robinson years, through five championships with Tim Duncan, through the rebuild, and now through this new era.
For someone to sit in their arena, watching their team, and question how the local fans can afford to be there? That's not just ignorant - it's insulting to an entire community that has supported this franchise through thick and thin.
Fox gets it. He understands that basketball is for everyone, that arenas should reflect the communities they're in, that diversity makes sports better, not worse. His personal connection - having children who are part Mexican - gives his words extra weight, but honestly, you don't need a personal connection to call out bigotry when you see it.
The Spurs organization has always embraced their community. Gregg Popovich has been vocal about social justice issues. The franchise has Spanish-language broadcasts and Mexican heritage nights. They understand that their fanbase is diverse, and they celebrate that.
