Chinese appliance giant Midea has opened Indonesia's largest refrigerator manufacturing facility in Karawang, underscoring the country's growing competitiveness as a regional production base and its success in attracting Chinese manufacturing investment.
The facility, reported by VOI, occupies more than 150,000 square meters in the Suryacipta Karawang industrial zone with planned annual production capacity exceeding two million units. The plant will serve both Indonesia's growing domestic market and export to neighboring countries.
The investment reflects Indonesia's advantages in competing with Vietnam and Thailand for foreign direct investment: a large domestic market of 280 million people, improving infrastructure, and supportive government policies toward manufacturing. President Prabowo Subianto's administration has prioritized attracting high-value manufacturing to create jobs and develop industrial capacity.
Karawang, located east of Jakarta, has emerged as Indonesia's premier industrial hub, hosting automotive, electronics, and appliance manufacturers. The concentration of suppliers and logistics infrastructure makes it an attractive location for large-scale production facilities.
Chinese investment in Indonesia has expanded significantly in recent years, spanning manufacturing, infrastructure, and natural resources. While some projects have faced local resistance, particularly in resource extraction, manufacturing facilities like Midea's factory generally receive positive reception for their job creation.
In Indonesia, as across archipelagic democracies, unity in diversity requires constant negotiation across islands, ethnicities, and beliefs. Industrial development that creates employment across different regions helps maintain economic cohesion.
The two-million-unit capacity positions Indonesia as a significant player in Southeast Asian appliance production, demonstrating the country's manufacturing potential beyond traditional sectors like textiles and food processing.
