How do they keep doing this?
The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs have acquired quarterback Justin Fields from the New York Jets for just a 2027 sixth-round pick, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. And here's the kicker - other teams were interested, but Fields chose Kansas City.
Let me say that again: a former first-round pick, a guy who was the 11th overall selection in the 2021 draft, is going to the back-to-back Super Bowl champions for a sixth-round pick in 2027. That's not trade compensation - that's highway robbery.
This is Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach working magic again, folks. They've built a dynasty not just by drafting well, but by finding value where others don't. They see an opportunity, they strike, and suddenly they've got an elite backup quarterback learning behind Patrick Mahomes while the rest of the league wonders what just happened.
Fields had options. He could have gone elsewhere for a chance to compete for a starting job. Instead, he chose Kansas City - chose to learn from one of the greatest quarterback-coach combinations in NFL history, chose to be part of a winning culture, chose to position himself for long-term success.
Smart move by Fields. Brilliant move by the Chiefs.
Think about what this does for Kansas City. They now have one of the best backup quarterbacks in football - a guy with starting experience, elite athleticism, and the ability to extend plays with his legs. If Mahomes misses time (knock on wood), they're not scrambling. If they need a change of pace in certain packages, they've got options.
And for a sixth-round pick two years from now? That's the kind of pick you use on a long snapper or a practice squad player. The Chiefs just used it to land a 25-year-old quarterback with 44 career starts.
The Jets, meanwhile, are left with , , and in their quarterback room. Good luck with that.
