A digital nomad asked the blunt question on everyone's mind: "What is the cheapest place to nomad in 2026?"
The responses from experienced nomads reveal that ultra-budget nomading still exists - but it requires looking beyond the Instagram hotspots.
One surprising answer dominated the thread: China.
"Some unknown smaller city in China will have good and reliable internet connection, same with electricity, plus food and rent is generally really cheap," one nomad reported. "$3-10 USD a day for eating out plus sub-$200 USD rent is realistic for a one-bedroom flat."
The catch: payment systems can be challenging for foreigners, and VPN requirements add complexity. But for those whose income sources work in China, it offers unbeatable value with first-world infrastructure at third-world prices.
Southeast Asia still dominates the budget category, with Vietnam leading the pack.
"Vietnam is the sweet spot," multiple nomads agreed. Cities like Da Nang, Hoi An, and Can Tho offer comfortable living for $600-800/month including rent, food, and transport.
India remains the extreme budget champion for those who can handle the intensity. Goa, Rishikesh, and cities like Jaipur and Udaipur offer full apartments for $150-250/month.
"The air quality is garbage in northern cities during winter, though," one nomad cautioned. " or during that season if you care about breathing."
