Montreal loves a goalie, and right now, they're falling head over heels for Jakub Dobeš.
The rookie netminder received a standing ovation after the Canadiens' 6-2 playoff victory over the Buffalo Sabres, and when reporters asked him about becoming a cult hero in hockey-mad Montreal, his response was absolutely perfect.
"I'm just a goofy goalie who tries to stop pucks and trust me, I don't call myself a hero," Dobeš said. "I pretty much will go home, eat, watch Game of Thrones and go to bed."
This is how you win over a fanbase, folks. Stay humble. Stay grounded. And for the love of hockey, just stop the puck.
Dobeš has been doing exactly that throughout this playoff run. He's made big saves when the Habs needed them most, kept his cool under pressure, and shown the kind of poise that usually takes years to develop. And he's doing it all while practicing his French in postgame interviews and soaking up the adoration from the Bell Centre faithful.
Montreal has a history with goalies. Patrick Roy. Carey Price. The bar is impossibly high. But Dobeš isn't trying to be them - he's just trying to be himself. A "goofy goalie" who happens to be really, really good at his job.
After one play where Buffalo's Beck Malenstyn ran him over in the crease, Dobeš skated away fine and the Canadiens got a power play. Later, he was even caught talking smack to the Buffalo bench after a big save. The kid's got personality to match his skill.
The series now shifts back with Montreal up 2-1, and Dobeš has become must-watch TV. Every save gets a roar. Every win gets a standing ovation. And every quote makes you love him more.
That's what sports is all about, folks - a rookie goalie with the perfect attitude stealing hearts in the hockey capital of the world.
