The Chicago Bulls are betting on reclamation projects again, and this time it's Jaden Ivey - the fifth overall pick from just three years ago who the Detroit Pistons have apparently given up on.
In a three-team deal announced Monday, Chicago acquires Ivey and veteran point guard Mike Conley Jr., while Detroit gets Kevin Huerter and Dario Saric from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Minnesota, meanwhile, creates cap flexibility as they pursue Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Let's start with the obvious question: What the hell is Detroit doing?
Ivey was the No. 5 pick in 2022. He's 23 years old. He averaged 14.3 points and 4.2 assists this season. And you're trading him for Kevin Huerter and cap relief? Really?
This reeks of a franchise that doesn't know what it's building. The Pistons have been stuck in basketball purgatory for years, and instead of developing young talent, they're trading it away for veteran shooters. It's the same movie Detroit has been playing on repeat for a decade.
For Chicago, this is a classic Bulls move - acquiring a talented young player who hasn't figured it out yet and hoping a change of scenery unlocks something. Sometimes it works. Most of the time? Well, let's just say the Bulls haven't had the best track record with guard development.
Ivey has all the physical tools - elite athleticism, burst off the dribble, and defensive potential. But he's struggled with consistency, decision-making, and efficiency. The Pistons gave him the keys to the offense, and he averaged more turnovers (3.1) than assists in his first two seasons.
Can Chicago fix him? That's the million-dollar question.
The addition of Mike Conley is interesting too. At 38 years old, Conley isn't the player he once was, but he's a professional who can mentor Ivey and provide steady point guard play off the bench. Chicago doesn't have to rush Ivey into a starting role - they can let him develop behind veterans.
For Minnesota, this trade is all about creating the financial flexibility to make a run at Giannis. They're dumping salary (Conley and Huerter) while also adding a protected pick swap from Detroit. The Wolves are going all-in on star hunting.
