Remember when people said Bruno Fernandes was overrated? Remember when the critics came out after every tough loss, every penalty appeal, every moment of frustration?
Well, the Premier League Player of the Season just shut all of them up.
Manchester United's captain has been named Player of the Year by The Athletic, capping off a remarkable campaign where he led United back to Champions League contention and proved - once again - he's one of the world's elite midfielders.
"This is for everyone at the club," Fernandes said after receiving the award. "My teammates, the staff, the fans. We did this together."
Folks, leadership matters. And Bruno Fernandes is the definition of a leader.
He scored 18 goals from midfield this season. He added 14 assists. He played nearly every minute of every game, driving United forward even when things looked bleak. When the team needed a goal, he delivered. When they needed someone to take responsibility, he raised his hand.
The Premier League is the toughest league in the world. You're going up against Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal - super clubs with infinite resources. And Bruno Fernandes, with a United team that's still rebuilding, was the best player in the league.
Let that sink in.
"He's been immense for us all season," United manager Erik ten Hag said. "He's the heartbeat of this team. Everything goes through him."
The critics will always be there. They'll say he complains too much, that he's theatrical, that his numbers are inflated by penalties. But you know what? Winners win. And Bruno Fernandes is a winner.
