Here's a sentence I didn't expect to write in 2026: Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are returning for The Mummy 4, and it's being directed by Radio Silence, the team behind Scream VI and the wickedly entertaining Ready or Not.
Production is targeting an August start, according to Bloody Disgusting, which means we could see this in theaters by late 2027. And honestly? This might actually work.
The original Mummy trilogy (let's pretend Tom Cruise's 2017 attempt doesn't exist) succeeded because it understood something Hollywood keeps forgetting: adventure movies can be fun. Fraser's Rick O'Connell wasn't tortured or gritty. He was charming, occasionally incompetent, and genuinely seemed to enjoy punching mummies. The films had stakes, sure, but they also had joy.
Radio Silence—directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett—specialize in exactly that balance. Ready or Not mixed genuine horror with pitch-black comedy. Scream VI understood that franchise films can honor their legacy while having fun with the formula. If anyone can bring back The Mummy without either making it too dark or too silly, it's them.
The big question is what story justifies bringing back Fraser and Weisz 17 years after Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. That film ended with their characters riding off into the sunset with their son Alex, played by Luke Ford. Presumably, they've been living a nice quiet life not awakening ancient curses.
Except, of course, they have to awaken another ancient curse. That's the whole premise. The trick is making it feel organic rather than a cash grab trading on nostalgia. One possibility: their now-adult son gets into trouble, forcing his retired adventurer parents back into action. Another: they're pulled in as consultants when a new generation of idiots disturbs the wrong tomb.
