This is the next evolution of spam: not selling you anything, just existing to generate ad impressions.
Here's how it works. AI can generate a motivational quote paired with a vaguely uplifting image in seconds. Post it to Facebook. The algorithm can't tell it's synthetic. Users engage because the platform trained them to engage. Engagement drives distribution. Distribution drives ad revenue. Rinse and repeat, thousands of times per day.
The content isn't trying to inform you or entertain you. It's trying to exist in a way that maximizes algorithmic promotion. And it turns out AI is very good at reverse-engineering what algorithms reward.
Platforms are in a bind. They optimized for engagement, which means they can't easily filter out AI content without filtering out human content that triggers the same signals. The AI isn't breaking the rules — it's following them more efficiently than humans can.
Users are noticing. They're calling it "slop." They're posting screenshots of AI-generated nonsense flooding their feeds. They're complaining that social media feels less social and more like browsing an AI content farm.

Here's what keeps me up at night: we built social networks on the assumption that content creation had friction. Writing a post, taking a photo, making a video — these all took time and effort. That friction was a filter. It meant most of what got posted had at least some intentionality behind it.
AI removed the friction. Now you can generate 10,000 posts in the time it used to take to write one. And if even 1% of them go viral, you've won.
The backlash is building, but I'm not sure it matters. Users can complain, but they're still scrolling. Platforms can add labels, but they're still distributing the content. Researchers can build better detection, but adversarial models will adapt.
